Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a Postpartum Doula?

A Postpartum Doula holds a mama, baby, and her family through the transition of bringing a new life into the world. I am there to speak mama to mama about anything that is on your mind. I am also there to make sure you are nurtured and getting the rest you need as you and your family open this new chapter of life. Perhaps most importantly, I educate, advocate, and provide resources as you embark on your new journey with you new baby. I love holding space for new families and honoring mamas every step of the way. I know the challenges of having a new baby, and I am with you every step of the way.

What makes you different from a traditional Western Postpartum Doula?

My scope of care is more focused on mama's physical, mental, and spiritual recovery after having baby. I offer/teach specific therapies such as self-oil massage for baby and mama, herbal foods/teas, belly binding, specific dietary suggestions, reiki, marma therapy, flower essences, herbal baths, and more. All of these are vital to the health of mama and baby through mama's sacred 42 day window and beyond. These therapies can help to prevent and or negate issues such as postpartum depression/anxiety, postpartum hair loss, attachment issues, breastfeeding problems, digestive problems, exhaustion, depletion, and disease.

Why is it so important to focus on Mama during this time?

In Ayurveda, the saying goes: 42 days for 42 years. Today, we do not usually nurture the new mama, and instead, we expect mama to be "back on her feet" as soon as possible. The reality is that this idea of "bouncing back," not only depltes mama, but it is simply not possible. Every aspect of mama's life changes when she has a baby. Her brain is even rewired to care for her new little one! Not taking the time to nourish mama during her sacred window can result in depression, anxiety, lack of attachment to baby, hair loss, fatigue, hormone imbalances, digestive problems, joint problems, and so much more. Following the Ayruvedic model of care ensures that mama and baby are nourished, well-rested, and finding a new normal after the 42 days. After the sacred window, many mamas find great joy in "normal" life and are able to balance work, family, play, and relationships with ease.

Do you still offer help with laundry, dishes, and meal prep?

Absolutely!Laundry, dishes, and all those basic tasks are part of giving the rest you need and deserve. Each day, I work those tasks into what I am already doing for you. The Ayurvedic philosophy is the foundation of what I do, and resting with your baby nearby is going to help you heal physically and mentally. During your postpartum planning visits, we will plan your requested style of meals, and what types of tasks you need the most help with. I will also be sure to cover how you do your laundry and dishes so that you don't have to think about that when I am there.

Do you offer house cleaning services or childcare?

While I do offer light housework and childcare, I am not a professional cleaner or nanny. For example, I am happy to fold a load or two of laundry or get a snack for siblings. Generally though, I am here for you and a lot of my time is utilized for your care and recovery. If you have other children, I recommend that you have a caregiver present if possible.

Do you offer Breastfeeding Support?

While I am not a licensed lactation consultant, I have 3.5 years of personal experience and additional Ayurvedic breastfeeding training. I have been a full time pumping mama, built my supply from only 12 oz/day to 25oz/day, been through nursing strikes, and have almost seen it all. I have also formula fed and used donor breast milk!  In Ayurveda, breastmilk is deemed the perfect food for baby. The pillars in Ayurveda, such as rest, warm drinks, and some herbal foods all support healthy lactation. I am able to help with general breastfeeding advice such as normal infant breastfeeding patterns, proper latch, nursing positions, chapped nipples, engorgement, supply issues, finding the right pump, flange sizing, and nursing when mamas is away from baby. If there is something specific to you that is outside of my scope of practice, I am happy to recommend some wonderful lactation specialists.

How to payments work?

I accept cash, check or card. It is also possible to receive insurance reimbursement or HSA payment if your plan covers doula services. I collect a $500 or 30% (whichever is greater) nonrefundable retainer fee once we establish that we are a good fit. This saves your spot with me and covers the cost of supplies needed for your care. After the retainer fee is collected, I generally require the full amount to be paid by the end of my first day of care with you. That way, I can stay as long as needed (within reason) on any given day and give all of my attention to you and your family. I am happy to offer payment plans for weekly or monthly payment. I am also happy to discuss any and all payment timelines. However, please do be aware that I recommend you book your care with me at around 6 months pregnant or less so that I can offer as much flexibility as possible.

Do you customize packages?

Absolutely! I love creating packages that are tailored especially for you! Simply email or text me and we will set up a meeting. From there, we will discuss what type of care you are looking for and how I can best serve you. I always honor the pillars of Ayurvedic Care, so I will always include emphasis on rest, warm, soupy foods, belly wrapping, mama and baby massage instruction, and teas. Generally, a single day of care is approximately $375/day (about 5 hours plus belly wrapping, massage instruction with herbal oils, food preparation, an Ayurvedic meal cooked and paid for by me, herbs and teas to last for the full 42 days, light housework, light newborn care, etc.) More visits will reduce the cost per day.

What areas do you serve?

I typically travel to areas within 1 hour from New Castle, PA. However, I am happy to travel past 1 hour for a travel fee of $20 per visit. If you want to work with me, I highly recommend just reaching out! I will likely be able to provide some level of care, even if you are in a different state! It is amazing what education and preparation can do, even if I am unable to meet you in person. I am also happy to refer you to other Ayurvedic Doulas who may be in your area.
